Postpartum Doula • San Diego
A postpartum doula is a professional caregiver who provides varied non-medical support to new parents during the postpartum period. From emotional support and breastfeeding guidance to recovery support and help settling into your new normal, a postpartum doula can provide the resources, expertise, and care you need to thrive during this important time. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your family, a postpartum doula can make all the difference in your experience.
Meet Emily
Over the course of my 15+ year nanny career I have had the privilege of accompanying multiple families through the postpartum season as their families grew. I always did my best to help facilitate an easier time for everyone but often felt like something was missing. After learning about postpartum doula work I did my research and began my training with DONA International. My training affirmed everything I believed about the type of support all families deserve and taught me the skills to be able to offer that! Since then I have continued to learn and expand my services to offer the best postnatal support possible. It would be an honor to come alongside your family to make your postpartum season the most positive experience possible.
My Postpartum Doula Services
Postpartum support can look different with every visit! It’s entirely based on what you need. Daytime support can be anything from holding your baby while you shower to folding laundry while you share about the joys and challenges of adding a new member to the family. You might need an extra set of hands while you figure out baby wearing or need some tips and tricks for getting your baby to sleep in the bassinet. Hiring a doula for overnight care can maximize sleep for everyone in the home which is so important for the quality of life for all! No matter what support you end up needing, a postpartum doula is an expert at finding the gaps and gently filling them in.
I offer daytime support and/or overnight care, starting with a free consultation to discuss what might work best for you!
Commonly Asked Questions
What is a postpartum doula?
A postpartum doula is someone who tends to the informational, emotional, and physical needs of a postpartum parent and family. Postpartum doulas are expertly trained in postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, infant care, family changes, and providing non-judgmental and evidence-based support to your entire family
Do you attend the birth?
As a postpartum doula my training and focus doesn’t include birth, but can start as early as your first day/night home with your little one.
What is the difference between a postpartum doula and a nanny/night nurse?
Simply put, the postpartum doula is baby-care plus you-care! They provide physical and emotional recovery care for the birthing parent, newborn care, and support for partner and siblings as the whole family transitions to include your newest member. In contrast, the nanny/night nurse is hired solely to care for the infant.
What don’t postpartum doulas do?
Postpartum doulas do not offer medical advice, provide medical care, or speak for the mother or family on any medical matters. Alternatively, the doula provides information, resources, support, and referral. If they can’t help you, they can help you find someone who can!
When should I hire a doula?
It’s never too early to start planning your postpartum support system! The earlier you reach out the better chance you have that your doula of choice will be available.
